PFI Standards Program Welcomes Pacific Coast Pellets and Dry Creek Products

The Pellet Fuels Institute announced this week the qualification of Dry Creek Products of Arcade, NY, and Pacific Coast Pellets of Shelton, Washington, to the PFI Standards Program. The program now represents 23 pellet manufacturers with 36 facilities among them. Both companies were qualified by accredited auditing agency Timber Products Inspection.

For information on qualifying for the program, the first step is to contact an accredited auditing agency, a list of which can be find on PFI's website. For further details on the PFI Standards Program, including a list of participating manufacturers, visit the PFI website, www.pelletheat.org

Drax Bids to Buy Two Southern Pellet Mills

Drax announced on Feb. 27 that it is participating in separate processes for the acquisition out of bankruptcy for the operating assets of Texas Pellets in Woodville, Texas, and Louisiana Pellets in Urania, Louisiana.

Drax notified investors that it has submitted initial cash bids for the assets as part of an auction process, which will be held on March 1 and March 2. "Whilst these are binding bids, and could be accepted by the sellers, it is expected that the successful buyer will be determined through auctions," Drax said.

Astec Weighs in on Strong Year, Future Wood Pellet Projects

Astec Inc. reported a solid year in 2016, having grown both revenue and net income quarter-over- quarter and year-over-year, on top of an end-of-year record backlog and a larger-than-anticipated number for pellet plant revenue.

Net sales for the fourth quarter of 2016 were $326.6 million, compared to $215.0 million for Q4 2015, 2015, a 52 percent increase. Earnings for the Q4 2016 were $12.4 million or $0.53 per diluted share, compared to $3.6 million or $0.16 per diluted share in Q4 2015, an increase in earnings per share of 231 percent.

NH's Wood Heat Efforts Slow

The use of wood chips and pellets for heating businesses, schools and government buildings has grown dramatically in the last five years and is reportedly saving three hospitals in the North Country alone about $750,000 a year.

But the switchover has been stalled by lower prices for fossil fuel, according to a new study done by Innovative Natural Resource Solutions.
