Join Waste to Wisdom for Oct. 23 Webinar on Underutilized Feedstocks

The Waste to Wisdom feedstock development research team will present innovative methods of producing quality feedstocks from forest residues that are currently underutilized or wasted. The main topics to be presented include:

  • Separating/sorting tree tops from logging residues during timber operations
  • Quality of feedstocks produced from tops and limbs/branches
  • Baling limbs/branches for efficient handling and transportation
  • Testing screening technologies for controlling feedstock sizes

The presentation will cover the study methods used, data analysis, summaries of results, and implication of the research work for forestland owners and biomass energy industry. All these efforts have been performed under the goal of efficient utilization of forest residues as a way to cost-effectively manage forest residues, maximize environmental benefits, and create opportunities for production of bioenergy and bio-based products.

The Pellet Fuels Institute is proud to be a partner in the Waste to Wisdom Initiative.

EPA Defends New Emissions Rules to House Republicans

Party lines prevailed Wednesday at a House hearing on power-plant regulations that the government calls necessary to fight climate change.

The Environmental Protection Agency regulations in question require states to submit plans within the next three years, detailing how they will meet more rigorous carbon-emissions standards at new fossil-fuel power plants by 2030.

Republicans with the House Committee on Energy and Commerce told the EPA's Janet McCabe on Wednesday that the rule effectively implements a cap-and-trade program without congressional approval.

McCabe, the acting EPA administrator for air and radiation, rejected these suggestions, directly telling the committee multiple times that the program does not create a cap-and-trade program.

Furthermore, the EPA reached out to utilities in developing the rules, and they supported states taking up rate-based plans as part of their efforts to comply, McCabe said.

Gearing up for wood pellets: Bay State logger turns to Morbark to debark material for clean chip market (Massachusetts)
TimberLine
When Paul Davis went looking for a way he could process more wood material into clean chips and increase his profits, he turned to Morbark for the machine to do the job. Paul, the owner of Forward Enterprises Inc., which has logging and chipping operations, already had a flail chain debarker – with two chain flails – for debarking low-grade hardwood material, and he also had a Morbark chipper to make the chips. In fact, he already was making clean chips, which were being supplied to a plant that manufactures wood fuel pellets.
