From the Director’s Desk: Showtime – October Kicks Off Heating Season, PFI Board Gathers Next Week

Showtime – October Kicks Off Heating Season

Wood pellet producers, hearth retailers, and pellet retailers alike all anticipate October, and for good reason. Year after year, wood pellet sales reach their peak in October as consumers lay in their wood pellets for the first half of the heating season at least. In this way, October sales are brisk regardless of the weather. Last year, even as summer temperatures hung on well into September and October, wood pellet sales peaked in October at 198,453 tons, besting the next closest month (September) by 30,000 tons.

October 5-year average (in tons)

PFI Board Gathers Next Week

The Pellet Fuels Institute Board of Directors will gather next week in Broomfield, Colorado. The Board will discuss regulatory and policy strategies for the coming year, identify budgetary targets, and make plans for federal advocacy efforts, including a fly-in for 2026. Board meetings provide PFI members with an opportunity to network with their fellow pellet producers and share marketplace concerns and challenges common to all producers. I would like to extend my thanks to all PFI board members who are taking time out of their busy work week to join the meeting.

Shirt-sleeves on Halloween?: It looks like warmer-than-normal temperatures will persist for the rest of the month, with most parts of the country likely to experience warmer-than-average temperatures.  Overnight lows in Strong, Maine (a frequent Pellet Wire locale) this week dip into the mid to upper 30s, but for now that first real cold snap isn’t showing up on the forecast.
